Studor has been leading the way in drainage ventilation technology since 1975, providing solutions through innovative products which meet the requirements of all types of buildings’ drainage systems. By controlling pressure fluctuations in the drainage system through active ventilation, the Studor product range protects the only barrier between the drainage system and the habitable space – the water trap seal. As a specialist brand dedicated solely to technologies related to drainage pressure fluctuation, Studor fully complements Aliaxis Nederland B.V.’s other specialist drainage products.
As recognised experts in drainage ventilation technology, Studor has been instrumental in the development of international standards for drainage design inside buildings, and for the introduction of international standards for Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) and related drainage ventilation technologies worldwide since 1975.
Sture and Doris
Mini-Vent & Maxi-Vent
First Bjare Valve
Sture Ericson, co-founder of Studor, applied for the patent on his first designed AAV – the Bjare Valve (the ancestor of the Maxi-Vent) – in July 1973. It was seen as a great technological development, as by installing it there was no longer any need for the primary drainage ventilation pipe to penetrate the roof.
Sture met Doris and Studor (Sture & Doris) was conceived in 1975, with momentum swiftly growing:
1975: Europe
1979: Launch of the first industrial moulded valve – the Maxi-Vent
1980: Launch of the Mini-Vent
1981: Launch of the Combi-Siphon
1986: USA
1998: Asia
2000: Australia & New Zealand
2003: Launch of the Chem-Vent, Tec-Vent and the P.A.P.A.
2004: Latin & South America
2005: Middle East & launch of the Maxi-Filtra
2010: Africa
In 1998 the distribution rights for North America, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico were sold to IPS Corporation, who acquired the full manufacturing rights for these territories, as well as Australia and New Zealand, in 2016.
The next chapter in Studor’s exciting future began when the remaining worldwide business was acquired the Aliaxis Group in 2017.
Studor has well-established links and relationships with international organisations and institutes such as the CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers), CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat), Heriot-Watt University, the CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction), and the WPC (World Plumbing Council). As a result, members of our expert team, have had technical papers published and have been invited to give presentations at international industry events.
Ongoing research and development has been key to Studor’s success, ensuring that we can offer a product range and solutions which fulfils the demands of modern building practices.
It was through our partnership with Heriot-Watt University that resulted in the P.A.P.A. (invented by Professor John A. Swaffield and Dr David Campbell), developed to address the unique problems encountered in the drainage system in high-rise buildings.
In 2015 Studor established a “Seeing is Believing” test tower in the UK, which allowed industry professionals to see first-hand in a 39 storey drainage system that active drainage ventilation (in which the P.A.P.A. and AAVs work together to balance the pressures in the system) really does work – bringing together scientific and empirical evidence.
Given the importance of the water trap seal in protecting the inhabitants of a building from bad odours and harmful pathogens from the drainage system, the Studor products are designed and manufactured to the highest of international standards.
Consequently, the Studor products have been issued with numerous approvals across the world which verify full production compliance with the standards. For example, the European KEYMARK scheme and the US NSF 14 scheme.
Material selection and precision in the manufacturing process is key, as even the slightest warp in the seating of the membrane would cause the valve to leak. All our manufacturing facilities are carefully selected and are ISO 9001 accredited. In addition, in accordance with the requirements of the various worldwide approvals bodies, they are inspected annually by various third-party bodies, and regular independent product testing is also carried out, including lifecycle testing to 500,000 cycles to extreme temperatures.
As a result of our confidence in our quality we are able to offer a limited 10 year warranty on our products.
The Studor products are manufactured and tested to the highest standards in line with all building and planning regulations for drainage systems across different continents.
The Studor AAV’s fall under EN12380 CE regulation which is basically a self-declaration without a further requirement for independent validation in most cases. The KEYMARK is the European quality mark showing the conformity of products with European Standards often granted in combination with marks of existing national certification systems. Several of the Studor Air Admittance Valves have been issued the KEYMARK certificate by DIN CERTCO providing a tested and certified observance of uniform European Quality Standards.
